A willing pupil of a teacher without equal

A number of years ago, I was buying some bumper stickers for my bike. I looked at the selection, and picked out two: “Love Your Mother”, and “Kill Your TV”. The guy in line behind me made a remark about me not seeing the contradiction between these two ideas of loving and killing.
But really, that’s just the nature of being a farmer. Whether its going on a slug hunt or hoeing millions of weeds, we take life in order to nurture life.
Thinking about this brings me around to what ultimately is my favorite thing about farming. It is the intimacy with nature that comes from day-in, day-out exposure; influencing natural processes and learning from the results; bearing witness to her generosity, her harshness, her ever-changing repetitions …an infinite mystery. As is written over the shrine of Isis, “I am all that ever has been, now is, or ever will be, and no mortal has ever lifted my veil”.
