Looking back on Summer

The heat of Summer has passed and the chill of Fall has arrived.

The last red ripe strawberries and tomatoes were picked several weeks ago.

We enjoyed a great harvest of apples, grapes, blackberries, strawberries, onions, potatoes, sunchokes, tomatoes, chard, kale, cabbage, and much more. Our fig tree we ordered this year from Peacefull Valley gave us a dozen delicious figs.

All the animals on the farm are doing great.

All four Bee Colonies are healthy and thriving. We harvested a few jars of honeycomb and honey from the hives. We left everything else for them to have for the winter. We practice natural beekeeping. We believe it’s healthier for the bees to have honey instead of fed sugar.

Now we are focused on our fall crops. Microgreens are going in the greenhouse. Cilantro, peas, Italian parsley, and other herbs are doing well. Potatoes, onions, garlic, and red shallots have all been planted.

The Earthworm bin has been moved to the greenhouse. We are now focused on cleaning the beds and planting cover crops. Looking forward to the next harvest.

forced day-off

I am writing this from home, around 11:45 AM. I am on “vacation”. not really. I came down with the flu yesterday (and all that entails - not pretty).

So, i have a day off. That is not easy for me. We are picking for our three farmers’ markets today and i know it’s tough to lose a member of the crew.

In addition, we are finishing up our last carrot planting and I really wanted to be there for that. Fall chard went in the ground yesterday. All of our brassica successions for the fall will be in the ground next week, along with the first of the fall lettuce, many more beets, turnips, scallions, kohlrabi, kales, etc. peas will go in soon also.

It’s time to start the onions also.

Oh well, I might be able to get out this afternoon. I just need the headache to subside.

Last Market finito

I went to the last Tuesday market in Nevada City today. It was a busy market. So many people came out. We haven’t had such a busy market all year. It was nice to end it with plenty of shoppers. For my part, I brought lots of kale, chard, eggplant, peppers, lettuce mix, winter squash, cherry tomatos, peas, basil, celery and broccoli. It was a nice close to the season for me. Melons and Corn

The honeydew melons are just beginning to ripen. It is delicious to have a fresh, well-grown honeydew. The sweet corn takes too much water. I wonder if it’s worth it? The days haven’t been too hot here. That means slower ripening, but still a good amount. The tomatoes are still going strong, and I hope they do all the way through October. We’ll see about that. A Transition

So much has changed in the past 5 months. Of course the physical layout of the farm has changed dramatically…going from virgin meadow to cover crop to intense/intensive vegetable cultivation. Alike, my mind is wrapping around and becoming comfortable with the ever-changing dynamic of the farm. We have completed six weeks of the CSA, a quarter of the season, with 18 more weeks to go. CSA Week 4

We are now entering week four (of 24) for the CSA. Today we had our drop-off/pick-up for our 10 monday members. We have 23 members in all - 10 on Monday and 13 on Wednesday. We are going to add members when the summer stuff really picks up, but for now, that is our max. The first boxes had: Daikon radish, salad radishes, kale, tat soi, baby stir fry mix, lettuce mix, broccoli, rosemary, oregano, dill and baby spinach. Next week it will be very similar, yet much more broccoli. Carrots are still a couple of weeks away, as are beets, peas, cabbage, cauliflower and chard. We are gearing up for a maha (great) week at the farm, with many hundreds of row feet to be direct seeded.
